Arrest and Detention of Jaranbayar Soyolt On January 6, 2008, Jaranbayar Soyolt was arrested in Beijing Airport, China. His wife and friends who were traveling with him, saw Soyolt was in handcuffs and surrounded by 5 Chinese policemen. On January 11, according to his wife, Soyolt was forced by the Chinese authorities to contact his friend by telephone from Beijing to tell him that he is still being held in Beijing for “some issue” with his passport, and asked his friend and others not to reveal anything about his arrest to any foreign news media in order not to “make things worse”. Under this threat, family members and friends of Soyolt have kept quiet and waited for his release until fairly recently. It seems that the government of China has ordered and orchestrated the arrest and detention of Jaranbayar Soyolt. Chinese authorities initially, denied of his arrest. Later on, only on January 31, 2008, under pressure from Mongolian government, eventually admitted that Jaranbayar Soyolt was arrested and put in a jail. Chinese government provides no explanation about reasons and grounds of arrest and detention of Jaranbayar Soyolt. Therefore, it was clearly extrajudicial, politically motivated arrest in violation of domestic and international human rights law. Also due to his activism in human rights, we fear that Jaranbayar Soyolt is being tortured, denied proper care, sanitation, diet and other human needs. We are also gravely worried about his life and welfare of his being. | | Actions Taken to Free Jaranbayar Soyolt Letter to Mr. Hu Jin Tao, the Prime Minister Beijing, China
